Why I Wrote Love Across Spectrums

I didn’t write Love Across Spectrums from a distance.

I wrote it from 15 years of loving, living, struggling to keep my marriage alive, preserving myself, reclaiming myself, and continuing to grow—both as the wife of someone on the autism spectrum and as a woman who is her own person, with her own dreams, goals, wishes, needs, and a deep desire to love her husband without giving up her life.

I’ve been with my husband since 2011.

When we met, I didn’t even know what autism spectrum disorder was. He was living his life undiagnosed, and eventually his diagnosis became something we experienced together, just as so many other things in our life did.

Over the years, I learned that loving someone deeply doesn’t automatically make communication, conflict, intimacy, or everyday life easy.

There were things I didn’t understand.

Things I took personally that I later understood differently.

Conversations that seemed simple but somehow became complicated.

Tears I wish I never had to cry.

Words I wish I could have said more gently, or with more understanding.

And moments when I wondered whether I was asking for too much—or simply asking for things that mattered to me.

But I was, just as you are, human.

I was doing my best to figure things out.

I kept looking for strategies that could make everyday life a little better for both of us.

And somewhere along the way, I learned something that changed everything:

Understanding your partner should never require you to lose yourself.

I could love my husband and still have needs.

I could understand his differences and still have boundaries.

I could have compassion for what was difficult for him without deciding that what was difficult for me didn't matter.

And I could work on my marriage without abandoning the woman I was outside of it.

That realization became the foundation for Love Across Spectrums.

I wrote this book because, after years of searching, I found that many of the resources I came across seemed to leave me with two choices:

Give up on the relationship.

Or give up on myself for the sake of the relationship.

Neither felt right.

I wanted the book I wish the younger version of me had been able to pick up years earlier.

I wanted a book written from the perspective of someone who had actually lived it for years—not someone who had already given up on the relationship, or someone who had never been in a relationship with a person on the spectrum.

My husband was never a “case study” to me. He is a real, living, breathing man I love. Our relationship wasn't an experiment. It meant—and still means—everything to me.

I wanted a book that wasn't cynical, clinical, or impractical.

So I wrote the book I needed—for myself, and for you, wherever you are right now in your relationship with a man you love who is on the autism spectrum.

I took what I had learned through 15 years of experience, mistakes, difficult conversations, research, reflection, love, laughter and real-life application and turned it into more than 200 practical strategies you can actually try.

Not strategies for changing you or your partner into someone you're not.

513 pages of practical strategies for everyday issues like:

  • Understanding each other better.

  • Communicating more effectively.

  • Resolving conflict.

  • Protecting your boundaries.

  • Building connection and intimacy.

  • Creating a relationship where both people matter.

Whether you’re dating, married, or building a life with a partner on the autism spectrum, I want you to know something I had to learn for myself:

And if you realize that you’ve felt lost in your relationship for a long time, it’s okay. I wrote a map while standing where you are right now, and together we can retrace your steps back to yourself.

Welcome home to Love Across Spectrums, I am so excited to meet you in its pages!

See You There!
